Cambodia Cracks Down on Gambling with New Deputy Commissioner

Phnom Penh: In a significant move to strengthen its efforts against commercial gambling crime, the Cambodian National Police has appointed Lieutenant General Hem Sovath as the Deputy Commissioner in charge of this critical area. The appointment ceremony, which also saw Lt. Gen. Hem Sovath being conferred with the rank of National Police Chief at the rank of General, took place during a comprehensive meeting at the Ministry of Interior on February 1, 2024.

This pivotal meeting, aimed at reviewing the outcomes of January and outlining the objectives for February 2024, was organized by the General Commission of the National Police. It marks a crucial step in the ongoing battle against illegal gambling activities that have been a concern for law enforcement agencies in the country.

Lt. Gen. Hem Sovath's elevation to this key position follows a history of trust and proven capability, having been appointed by the Prime Minister of Cambodia on November 15, 2023. His leadership is expected to bring a renewed focus and enhanced effectiveness to the anti-commercial gambling operations within the National Police.

This strategic appointment underscores the Cambodian government's commitment to curbing illegal gambling activities, which pose significant social and economic challenges. With Lt. Gen.
